Ashwagandha With a Name On It.
KSM-66. Root Only. One a Day.

A lot of ashwagandha capsules say "ashwagandha" and not much else. This one says what it is: 500mg of KSM-66, a root-only extract with its own name, in one vegan capsule a day, ninety to the bottle, made in the UK. Nothing else in the capsule but the shell and a rice-based filler. If you want to know exactly what you're taking, that's the whole point of it.

The One With the Name On.

Ashwagandha is a root, Withania somnifera, used in Ayurveda for a very long time. What ends up in a capsule depends entirely on how it was extracted and from which part of the plant, and most packs don't tell you.

KSM-66 does. It's a named, root-only extract, made by one producer to one specification, which sets a minimum of 5% withanolides, the compounds the plant is known for. When the name is on the pack, you know which ashwagandha you're getting. That's rarer than it should be.

Why This One. 500mg, Printed Honestly.

500mg of KSM-66 in each capsule, which sits in the range the published trials of that extract used. KSM-66 is concentrated, roughly twelve parts of root to one of extract, and a lot of packs multiply by twelve and print 6,000mg.

Ours says 500mg, because that's what's in the capsule. One a day, so a bottle is ninety days rather than thirty. Vegan capsule shell, a rice-based filler and nothing else: no leaf, no blend, no black pepper, no second ingredient to wonder about. Made in the UK.

Ninety capsules. One a day. A quarter of a year in one bottle.

Root Only, and Why That Matters.

Some ashwagandha extracts use the leaf as well as the root, because the leaf is cheaper and gives a higher withanolide number on paper.

In Ayurveda it's the root that's used, and KSM-66 is made from the root alone, with a water-based process rather than an alcohol one. No milk in the extraction either, which is how a root extract ends up vegan. You'll find people who prefer the leaf-and-root extracts; this isn't one of them, and it says so.

Who Should Check First.

Adults only. Don't take it if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.

If you take thyroid medication, sedatives, antidepressants, immunosuppressants, or medicines for blood pressure or blood sugar, or if you have a thyroid, liver or autoimmune condition, or surgery coming up, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting. If you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, itching, or persistent nausea or stomach discomfort while taking any ashwagandha product, stop and seek medical advice.

What This Won't Do.

It won't taste of anything, because it's a capsule. It won't do anything sitting in the cupboard. And it won't be finished by the time you've formed a view, which is rather the point of a ninety-day bottle.

How You'll Know.

Give it the bottle. Ninety days, one a day, at the same time each day; most people take it with breakfast, some with the evening meal.

Form your view at the end of the bottle rather than the end of the week. If it isn't for you, full refund within 30 days, even if it's opened. No forms.

How to Take It.

Recommended daily intake: one capsule, with water, with food if you prefer. Don't take more.

Do not exceed recommended dose and consult your GP if pregnant, lactating, taking medication or under medical supervision. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet and healthy lifestyle. Not intended for use by persons under the age of 18 years. Store in a cool and dry place. Keep out of the reach of children.

On Repeat.

A bottle is ninety days, so a year is four deliveries. Subscribe and Save takes 15% off every delivery, renews at the interval you choose, and you can pause, skip or cancel in your account. Made by Wellgard since 2018.

Get on with your day.

Wellgard Ultimate Root Ashwagandha is a KSM-66 ashwagandha supplement in vegan capsules: 500mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract (extract of Withania somnifera root) per capsule, one capsule a day, 90 capsules per bottle, a 90-day supply. KSM-66 is a named, root-only extract made using only the roots of ashwagandha plants, extracted with water rather than alcohol and without milk, which is what makes the extract vegan. The 500mg is the extract weight in the capsule; because KSM-66 is a concentrated extract, some packs print a root-equivalent figure instead. Ingredients: KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (capsule shell), rice extract blend (rice extract, rice fibre, acacia gum, sunflower oil), rice fibre. No gluten, wheat, yeast, milk, lactose, soy, artificial flavours, artificial sweeteners or preservatives. No declared allergens. Made in the UK. Adults only: not intended for use by persons under the age of 18 years, and not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your GP if taking medication or under medical supervision. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Per capsule, the daily serving. 90 capsules per bottle, 90 servings.

About the extract

  • Withanolides are the group of compounds ashwagandha is known for. KSM-66 is made to contain more than 5% by weight
  • KSM-66 is roughly a 12:1 extract, so 500mg of extract is often printed by other brands as a 6,000mg root equivalent

Q&A

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

KSM-66 is a named ashwagandha root extract made by one producer to one specification: root only, a water-based extraction with no alcohol and no milk, and more than 5% withanolides. Regular ashwagandha on a pack can mean powdered root, a leaf-and-root extract, or an extract of unstated strength; the name tells you which you're getting.

500mg sits in the range the published KSM-66 trials used, which ran from 250mg to 600mg a day. Wellgard's capsule is one 500mg dose a day. Do not take more than one.

One capsule a day is the direction, for adults who aren't pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding and who aren't on medication or under medical supervision without checking first. Long-term use hasn't been studied as well as short-term use, so form your view at the end of the ninety-day bottle rather than treating it as indefinite.

For healthy adults taking it as directed, the published trials report it as well tolerated over weeks to a few months; stomach upset and drowsiness are the commonest complaints. It isn't for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha-containing products and the UK's Committee on Toxicity is reviewing the evidence, so if you have a liver condition, ask your GP first.

Anyone pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and anyone under eighteen, should not take it. Check first if you are on thyroid medication, sedatives, antidepressants, immunosuppressants or medicines for blood pressure or blood sugar, if you have a thyroid, liver or autoimmune condition, or if you have surgery coming up.

Ask a pharmacist about your own list, but the ones to raise are thyroid medication, sedatives and sleeping tablets, antidepressants, immunosuppressants, and medicines for blood pressure or blood sugar. Do not combine it with other ashwagandha products.

The NHS does not recommend ashwagandha, and it isn't prescribed; it's a food supplement. Wellgard sells it as what it is: 500mg of KSM-66 root extract, one capsule a day.

Yes. It's sold as a food supplement in Great Britain. Some countries have restricted it, and the UK's Committee on Toxicity is reviewing its safety, which is why this page carries the cautions it does.

Withanolides are the group of compounds ashwagandha is known for. KSM-66 is made to contain more than 5% of them by weight, measured by HPLC, a laboratory method. It's a way of knowing the extract is what it says it is.

In Ayurveda the root is the part of the plant that's used. Some extracts add leaf, which is cheaper and raises the withanolide number on paper. KSM-66 is root only, and Wellgard's capsule is KSM-66 and nothing else.

Whichever you'll remember. Most people take it with breakfast; some take it with the evening meal. One capsule a day, with water, at the same time each day.

One capsule a day, swallowed with water, with food if you prefer. Do not take more than one, and do not combine it with another ashwagandha product.

Give it the bottle: ninety capsules, ninety days. The refund covers the first thirty. Form your view at the end of the bottle, and if you plan to keep taking it beyond a few months, it's worth mentioning to your GP.

Compare four things: whether the extract is named, KSM-66 for instance, or just called ashwagandha; whether it's root only; the milligrams per capsule and how many capsules that means a day; and how many days a bottle lasts. Wellgard's is KSM-66, root only, 500mg, one a day, ninety days.

Winter cherry, and sometimes Indian ginseng, though it isn't related to ginseng. The Latin name is Withania somnifera, and it's the root that Wellgard's capsule is made from.

It's a root that has been used in Ayurveda for centuries, and it's sold in Great Britain as a food supplement. Wellgard's is 500mg of KSM-66 root extract, one capsule a day. If you're thinking of taking it for a particular reason, that's a conversation for your GP or pharmacist.

Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha-containing products, and the UK's Committee on Toxicity began reviewing the evidence in 2026. For most healthy adults taking one capsule a day the published trials report it as well tolerated. If you have a liver condition, ask your GP before taking any ashwagandha, and stop and seek advice if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, itching or persistent nausea.

Because KSM-66 is a concentrated extract, about twelve parts of root to one of extract, and some brands multiply the extract weight by twelve and print the root equivalent. Wellgard prints the extract weight, 500mg, because that's what's in the capsule. A 500mg KSM-66 capsule and a pack that says 6,000mg can be the same thing.

500mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract per capsule, a vegan capsule shell, and a rice-based filler. Ninety capsules. Vegan, made in the UK, free from gluten, wheat, yeast, milk, lactose and soy.

Yes. The capsule shell is plant-based cellulose and KSM-66 is extracted without milk, which is what makes a root extract vegan.

There is no black pepper in them. Some ashwagandha capsules add black pepper extract or a second botanical. This one is KSM-66 and a capsule shell.

They are different products. The gummies carry a different ashwagandha extract plus vitamin B6, two a day. The capsules are KSM-66 root extract, 500mg, one a day.

They're different things entirely, and Wellgard sells both. This page is the ashwagandha. If you're choosing between them, decide what you want to take rather than which is stronger.

It's a capsule, so no taste. Ashwagandha root has a faint earthy smell when you open the bottle, and customers say the capsules are easy to swallow.

Ninety, one a day, so a ninety-day supply. A year is four bottles rather than twelve.
