Psyllium Husk Used to Come Alone.
Not any more.
3.5g of psyllium husk with thirty-six fermented fruits and vegetables, the essential minerals magnesium and calcium, and forty-six ingredients in all, measured into one sachet so there's no spoon, timed so there's no guessing, and tasting, against every expectation, like a strawberry and banana smoothie. At the heart of it is the reason the box exists: Psyllium husk contributes to intestinal transit, intestinal function and helps to maintain a healthy bowel. Over a million doses so far, and the bag is over. The ritual starts with a glass.

Psyllium Husk, Without the Spoon.
Somewhere in your cupboard is a bag of psyllium husk with a spoon still in it. You bought it because a nutritionist on your phone said you should. You opened it once. It turned to wallpaper paste while you looked for a glass, and you drank it fast over the sink like a dare. That was psyllium's fault, not yours. Each Gut Ritual sachet carries 3.5g of psyllium husk, already measured. No spoon. No weighing. No loose powder. No glass you couldn't finish.
Cold water. One sachet. A stir. Two Minutes of doing nothing. Psyllium has never asked for so little.
Gel-Coated Lumps.
That isn't our phrase. It comes from the patents that describe what loose psyllium powder does when you stir it into water: the particles "agglomerate" into "gel-coated lumps, the interiors of which are still substantially dry", and are "extremely difficult to disperse". Another filing calls the drink "aesthetically objectionable" for its "grittiness, general mouth feel, viscosity, visual appearance". The industry has known all along. Gut Ritual's sachet is built for 150ml of cold water, stirred straight away, thickening evenly into a smoothie the colour of a plum. No lumps with a glass round them.
A Million Glasses.
Over a million Gut Ritual sachets have been torn open, stirred into cold water and waited for, in kitchens across Britain. That's a million times somebody chose the two minutes over the bag. Nobody makes a psyllium drink a habit because they were told to. They do it because it's the version they'd actually finish.
Two Minutes Is a Place.
Pour 150ml of cold water. Tear the sachet, add it to the water, stir straight away. Then do the thing a bag of psyllium never let you do: wait. Psyllium husk is a soluble fibre, and this is what it does in water: somewhere in the second minute the glass changes its mind. What was cloudy water is a soft smoothie the colour of a plum, and you have a moment with nothing to do but hold it. If it didn't thicken, it wouldn't be fibre; the Two Minutes are the ingredient list checking itself. That pause is Two Minutes. It was always going to take them; the difference is whether you dread them or keep them.
Seven Capsules, or One Sachet.
A psyllium capsule holds about 500mg. To take the 3.5g in one Gut Ritual sachet you'd swallow seven of them, one after another, with a glass of water, every day. Or you'd tear one sachet, and the water is already in the glass.
It Says Plum on the Box.
It tastes like a strawberry banana smoothie. We've stopped arguing with it. The flavouring is plum, and that's the truth; but there's banana in the blend, and strawberry, and thirty-four other fruits and vegetables, and what comes out of the glass has a mind of its own. "Tastes gorgeous," wrote one verified customer, presumably in surprise. Psyllium isn't supposed to taste of anything. This one has a personality.
Maintain a Healthy Bowel and Intestinal Transit.¹
¹ Psyllium (Plantago ispaghula) husk contributes to intestinal transit, intestinal function and helps to maintain a healthy bowel. 3.5g in every sachet, measured.
Why We Made It.
We kept psyllium in the cupboard too. We knew the arguments for it and we still didn't open the bag, because the bag was the problem. So we measured it, timed it, gave it something to taste of and put it in good company with thirty-six fermented fruits and vegetables. Then we did it a million times.
Who It's For.
For the person with a bag of psyllium in the cupboard, bought in a burst of good intentions, and a good reason for not opening it. For the one who did open it, drank it standing up, and never did it again. For anyone who'd rather take care of herself in a way she'd repeat.
Where It Lives.
Wherever your kettle does. Handbag, desk drawer, glovebox, hotel room: the portion is the same and nothing spills, which is more than the bag could say.
Forty-Six Ingredients, Chosen on Purpose.
A bag of psyllium is one ingredient. Gut Ritual is forty-six, chosen on purpose and named on the pack, with two minerals that carry sentences of their own: a rather different product that does more than psyllium husk alone could.²
