A little. Viscous fibre added to an ordinary diet reduced body weight by 0.33 kg across 62 trials, and by 0.81 kg inside a calorie-restricted diet across 15. Psyllium before meals reduced it by 2.1 kg in six trials authored by a manufacturer's employees, and by 0.28 kg, not significantly, across all 22. The injectable medicines semaglutide and tirzepatide reduced it by 14.9% and up to 20.9%.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Evidence at a glance
- Trials: 62 randomised trials of viscous fibre pooled in 2020 (3,877 people); 15 more inside calorie-restricted diets (1,347 people).
- Largest single trial cited: 2,539 adults over 72 weeks, a tirzepatide trial; the fibre figures all come from poolings.
- Strongest measured outcome: body weight 2.1 kg lower with psyllium before meals, six trials of 354 adults, manufacturer-authored.
- Not tested: any fibre in people taking semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Never take a gel-forming fibre dry: the NHS says to stir each ispaghula sachet into at least 150 ml of cold water, drink it immediately, and not just before sleep.7 Chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing after a dose needs urgent help. Ask a pharmacist first if you have difficulty swallowing, tummy pain with sickness, or an unusual change in your poo lasting over 2 weeks.8 Is psyllium husk safe has the rest.
How much does fibre change body weight?
By hundreds of grams. Across 62 trials of 3,877 people, viscous (gel-forming) fibre added to an ordinary diet for four weeks or more reduced body weight by 0.33 kg (moderate certainty) and waist size by 0.63 cm, with no change in body fat.1 Inside a calorie-restricted diet, across 15 trials of 1,347 people, body weight fell by 0.81 kg and body fat by 1.39% more than on the diet alone, also moderate certainty.2 In the Lancet series, higher-fibre diets produced lower body weight, blood pressure and total cholesterol in trials.9 No fibre except glucomannan carries an authorised weight or fullness wording in Great Britain.10

Does psyllium husk help weight loss?
A little. Taken just before meals at a mean 10.8 g a day for a mean 4.8 months, psyllium reduced body weight by 2.1 kg, BMI by 0.8 and waist size by 2.2 cm across six trials of 354 overweight adults, a pooling authored by employees of a psyllium manufacturer; across all 22 psyllium trials the change was 0.28 kg and not statistically significant.3, 4 The first pooling took only trials designed for weight loss; the second, every randomised trial in adults that reported weight.
In a manufacturer-funded study, 6.8 g before breakfast and lunch for three days reduced hunger against placebo; 3.4 g did less.15 "Before and after" photos are not evidence. What psyllium husk does and how to take psyllium husk go further.
Which fibre has an authorised weight wording?
Glucomannan, the gel-forming konjac fibre, is the one fibre with an authorised weight wording. "Glucomannan in the context of an energy restricted diet contributes to weight loss" is authorised where a food gives 3 g a day in three 1 g doses with 1 to 2 glasses of water before meals, in an energy-restricted diet; across eight trials the pooled difference against placebo was 0.22 kg and not statistically significant.10, 11 The register adds: "Warning of choking to be given for people with swallowing difficulties or when ingesting with inadequate fluid intake - advice on taking with plenty of water to ensure substance reaches stomach."10
Does inulin help you lose weight?
In the 36 of 55 trials that weighed people, inulin-type fructans lowered body weight by 0.97 kg with low certainty, more in trials of six weeks or longer and in people with overweight or obesity; waist size changed little.12 No weight or fullness wording is authorised for inulin; its one GB wording is about bowel function at 12 g a day of native chicory inulin.10 What is inulin has the foods.
What about flaxseed, chia and oats?
Across 45 trials flaxseed reduced body weight by 0.99 kg, the effect showing with whole seed at 30 g or more a day, over 12 weeks or longer, in people with a BMI of 27 or more.13 Chia lowered blood pressure by about 7 mmHg systolic and 6 diastolic across eight trials, with no significant effect on weight or waist.14 Beta-glucans, found in oats and barley, were consistent for fullness in a 2026 review; oat beta-glucan's authorised GB wordings concern cholesterol and blood sugar after a meal, not weight.10, 16 Psyllium, chia or flaxseed compares the three.
Does any fibre work like the weight-loss injections?
No. Semaglutide reduced body weight by 14.9% against 2.4% on placebo over 68 weeks in 1,961 adults, and tirzepatide by 15.0% to 20.9% against 3.1% over 72 weeks in 2,539.5, 6 The NHS says these medicines "reduce your appetite and help you feel fuller for longer", prescribed "alongside diet and lifestyle advice".17 Fibre's pooled figures run from hundreds of grams to 2 kg. Some fibres raise the body's own GLP-1, the gut's fullness hormone, after a meal; across 52 mostly short-term studies with a median of 19 people, those that found GLP-1 rising tended, not significantly, to find more fullness too.16 Do GLP-1 supplements work has the rest.
How much fibre a day should you eat for weight loss?
No UK figure exists for weight. The NHS sets 30 g a day for adults, notes that most eat "about 20g", and links plenty of fibre with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.18 In two cohorts of 8,300 adults with diabetes, 35 g a day against an average 19 g went with 14 fewer deaths per 1,000 over an average 8.8 years.19 The NHS gives no upper figure, but no long-term trial we found has tested 70 g or 50 g; raise fibre gradually with extra fluid, as what is fibremaxxing explains. The Wellgard fibre guide shows 30 g in UK portions.
What we don't know
- We found no trial of any fibre in people taking semaglutide or tirzepatide.
- None of these poolings reported belly fat, so belly-fat answers rest on waist size.
- Most fibre weight trials ran for weeks or months, and none here tested whether the weight stayed off.
- The independent pooling of all 22 psyllium trials found no significant change; no independent team has repeated the before-meals analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Does psyllium husk reduce belly fat?
No trial in either pooling measured belly fat directly. Waist size was 2.2 cm smaller in the manufacturer-authored pooling of six trials and 1.2 cm smaller, not significantly, across all 22.3, 4
How much psyllium husk a day did the weight trials use?
A mean 10.8 g a day, just before meals, for a mean 4.8 months: a trial figure, not a regimen.3 The NHS says at least 150 ml of cold water per sachet, drunk straight away.7
What is the best fibre for weight loss?
None has been shown best; the table sets the figures side by side. Psyllium before meals has the largest pooled figure, from manufacturer-authored work, and glucomannan the only authorised wording.3, 10
Does fibre make you feel full?
Some did in short studies: psyllium at 6.8 g before meals, in a manufacturer-funded study, and beta-glucans.15, 16 No fibre carries an authorised fullness wording in Great Britain.10
Can I take fibre with a weight-loss injection?
We found no trial of it. The NHS lists constipation or diarrhoea among tirzepatide's common side effects.20 Tummy pain with sickness can signal a bowel blockage, so ask a pharmacist before taking bulk fibre then.8 How much fibre you need on tirzepatide has the build-up plan.
