Should You Take Collagen on Mounjaro? Skin, Hair and Protein
Collagen has a real place on Mounjaro, and it does its best work as part of a combination: collagen peptides for the skin, protein to target, and the vitamins with authorised roles in skin and hair. Fast weight loss asks a lot of skin and hair: the skin has to shrink to a smaller frame while the body is short of protein, and the hair cycle responds to the shock by shedding two to four months in.1 The things that reliably help are enough protein overall, a pace of loss your skin can follow, resistance training, and the vitamins and minerals with an authorised role in normal skin and hair: vitamin C for normal collagen formation, zinc, biotin and vitamin A for the maintenance of normal skin and hair. Collagen peptides sit alongside those with consistent trial evidence for skin elasticity and hydration, and, as yet, no authorised UK claim. This article explains what that last point means, because it is widely misunderstood.
- The combination that makes sense: protein to target, collagen peptides as part of it, and the skin vitamins with authorised claims
- Collagen trials: consistent improvements in skin elasticity and hydration over 8 to 12 weeks, mostly in women not losing weight; hair has not yet been studied
- No authorised UK claim for collagen, which is a statement about the register, not proof it does nothing
- Get the order right: hit your protein target first, then collagen adds to it rather than standing in for it
Why skin and hair suffer on Mounjaro
Two things happen at once. Appetite falls by a quarter to a third, so protein intake drops unless you deliberately hold it up, and skin, hair and nails are made of protein and rebuilt from it daily.2 And weight comes off fast, which is what the medicine is for. Skin over the arms, stomach, thighs and face has to tighten to a smaller shape, and how well it does depends on age, genetics, how much is lost and how quickly. Hair reacts to the metabolic shock with telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding that lags the trigger by two to four months and resolves as weight stabilises, provided protein and iron are adequate.1 Mounjaro face and hair loss on Mounjaro cover each in full; this page is the chapter on collagen in our guide to living well on Mounjaro.
What collagen supplements have actually shown
Hydrolysed collagen, collagen peptides, is collagen protein broken into short chains that are absorbed like any other protein. Pooled trials in adults, mostly women in their forties to sixties who were not losing weight, show consistent improvements in skin elasticity and hydration after 8 to 12 weeks at 2.5 to 10 g a day, with reduced wrinkle depth in several studies.3, 4 The effects are real and reproducible across two meta-analyses; what has not yet been done is a trial in people losing weight on a GLP-1 medicine, which is the situation this page is about. For hair, the trials measured skin rather than hair, so collagen's contribution there is as a high-quality protein source for a tissue made of protein. The fair summary: a well-supported benefit for skin quality, a direct contribution to your protein total, and an open question on how much more it does during rapid weight loss.
Why collagen has no authorised health claim, and what that means
In the UK, a food or supplement may only state a health benefit if that exact claim is on the GB register of authorised health claims. The register was inherited from the EU system in 2021. Collagen was assessed by the European food safety authority in 2011 for joints and 2013 for skin, on the evidence available then, and in both cases the panel concluded a cause-and-effect relationship had not been established. No claim was authorised, and nothing has been reassessed since. That is why no collagen label in the UK can say it improves skin, hair or joints.
What that does not mean is that collagen has been shown to do nothing. An absence from the register says the evidence had not met the regulatory bar at the time of assessment and that no new application has since succeeded; it does not say the evidence is negative. Most of the collagen trials above were published after 2013. The register also lags science in general: it takes years and a manufacturer willing to fund an application for a claim to be added, and many well-studied nutrients carry no claim for effects that have decent evidence. So the position Wellgard takes is the one the rules allow and the evidence supports: we describe what the trials found, we do not claim a benefit on the product, and we attach the authorised wording to the nutrients that have it.
The nutrients that carry the claims
These are the authorised UK wordings, and they are the reason a combination makes more sense than collagen alone.
- Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, and of bones, cartilage, gums and teeth. Your body cannot make collagen without it, which is the one scientifically direct link between a nutrient and collagen.5
- Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails.
- Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and hair.
- Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal skin. High doses are a caution in pregnancy.
- Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones, at the intakes a protein source provides.
Each applies only when the product supplies the nutrient at a meaningful level, which in UK rules means at least 15% of the reference intake per serving.
How to use collagen on Mounjaro, if you choose to
First, hit the protein target: 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram a day in 25 to 30 g portions, because no skin or hair supplement compensates for a protein shortfall. How much protein you need on Mounjaro has the figure for your weight. Then, if you want collagen, count it as part of that total: a 13 g serving of collagen powder is about 11 g of protein and dissolves in coffee, tea or yoghurt, which suits a small appetite. Take it with vitamin C from food or a supplement, since collagen formation depends on it. Add zinc, biotin and vitamin A from a varied diet or a skin-and-hair formula if your diet has narrowed. Keep the pace of loss steady, keep resistance training, use sun protection, and give it months rather than weeks. Then judge the result by how your skin and hair look at a stable weight, not during the loss.
Wellgard makes Pure Collagen Powder, hydrolysed bovine collagen at 13 g a serving with no flavour, and a halal-certified version of the same formula; both are protein sources and neither carries a health claim, for the reasons above. Skin Fuel supplies vitamin A and zinc, which contribute to the maintenance of normal skin, and vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. As with any product containing vitamin A, avoid it if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.
Getting the most from collagen
Hit your daily protein target first, because collagen works as an addition to it rather than a replacement for eggs, yoghurt and fish. Know what it can and cannot change: facial volume loss is fat, not collagen, and is covered in Mounjaro face. For hair shedding, check iron status alongside, since that matters most during rapid weight loss. And if you have been told to limit protein for kidney disease, ask your renal dietitian before adding any protein source.
What we don't know
- Collagen during rapid weight loss. No trial has tested it in people losing weight on GLP-1 medicines.
- Collagen for hair. No trial has measured hair outcomes.
- Whether the skin effect persists after stopping; trials ran 8 to 12 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is it beneficial to take collagen while on Mounjaro?
Yes, as part of a combination with enough protein and the skin vitamins. Collagen trials show consistent benefits for skin elasticity and hydration; alongside protein, resistance training and a steady pace of loss it gives skin the best chance of keeping up.3, 4
What is the best collagen to take while on Mounjaro?
A plain hydrolysed collagen with a known gram dose, taken as part of your protein total, with vitamin C alongside. What matters is the gram dose of collagen per serving, whatever the flavour or blend.
What are the signs collagen is working?
In trials, the measurable changes were skin hydration and elasticity over two to three months. Earlier or larger changes usually have other causes working alongside it: the protein total, a stable weight or sun protection.
What is the downside of taking collagen?
Very few. It is well tolerated and counts towards your protein; the one mistake is relying on it instead of also reaching your protein target. People with kidney disease should check their protein allowance first.
