Is There A Downside To Taking Collagen?

Is There A Downside To Taking Collagen?

Our bodies need a regular supply of collagen to keep several parts of our body healthy; collagen can keep our skin firm, joints healthy and bones strong as well as offer many other vital benefits. Our body's dependency on collagen increases over time especially when our natural collagen production begins to decline when we get to around thirty years of age. Collagen may be the most abundant protein in our bodies but it does not last forever, therefore supplementing it early on before our levels begin to diminish significantly can be essential. Regular collagen supplements can keep our bodies strong on the inside to ensure we do not have any mobility or strength-related health concerns. Collagen supplements are also typically considered a very supplement to take with very minimal risks or downsides. If you are considering taking collagen then here are a few things to be aware of, which we will cover throughout today's post. However, collagen is an important protein that our body needs to stay healthy and strong as we progress through life; supplements are considered a safe method of containing a healthy balance. Although, some instances might make collagen production unsuitable or lead to minor side-effects…

Should you avoid taking collagen?

There are very few risks associated with taking collagen as it is generally considered a safe supplement so long as it is taken correctly and for a reason. If you do not yet (necessarily) need to supplement more collagen into your body, this could lead to minor side effects like stomach discomfort and even bloating. Whilst is it essential to have a regular supply of collagen inside the body, too many dos not equal ‘better’ or more effective results! Plus, collagen supplements are not always for everyone. Believe it or not but there are a few instances where collagen supplements may want to be avoided altogether and switched with an alternative supplement. Here is a list of instances where collagen supplements might not be suitable for you based on health-related conditions or dietary restrictions…

  • People with a history of kidney stones should not take too many collagen peptide supplements and should speak to their GP first if considering the supplement.
  • Vegetarians and Vegans will want to avoid both marine and bovine collagen as they are sourced from animals; vegan collagen exists but its effectiveness is limited!
  • Kosher or Halal diets might also want to do their research on collagen, as not all will be suitable due to the animals used to obtain the collagen*
  • People with fish, shellfish or egg allergies might also want to be mindful that collagen powder may contain these ingredients (especially marine collagen).

*Our very own award-winning Bovine Collagen Peptide Powder is suitable for both Halal and Kosher dietary requirements.

If you are still unsure whether or not collagen powder or supplements are going to be suitable for you based on your deity requirements or concerning pre-existing health concerns (like allergies) then it's highly advised that you seek medical advice from your GP. They will be able to help you find alternative supplements if collagen supplements are deemed unsuitable for you; although this is not a common occurrence. Dietary restrictions and allergies are the main reasons (commonly) why some people should avoid collagen supplements.

Is collagen powder hard on kidneys?

Now, we did just mention that people with a history of kidney stones should not take too many collagen peptide supplements if any at all and there is a reason for this logic. Collagen supplements are not typically recommended for people who are at a high risk of developing kidney stones as they can contain Hydroxyproline which could lead to more kidney stones or crystals! However, this does not mean that collagen is likely to cause kidney stones for most healthy people! You can consume collage in moderation as part of a healthy diet without needing to worry about the risks of kidney stones if you have no history of them!

Can collagen powder have negative side effects?

We did briefly mention that collagen powder can trigger a small number of minor side effects, although these would not be long-lasting or too invasive. The chances of experiencing any side effects from collagen supplements, like collagen powder, are low but can happen from time to time. Although they might not even occur at all! The minor side effects you might experience, due to collagen powder, might trigger one or a combination of the below side effects:

  • Stomach bloating
  • Feelings of fullness
  • Heartburn
  • Mild diarrhoea

Any side effects associated with taking collagen supplements should not last longer than a few days and are only likely to occur when you first begin taking the supplement. The minor effects could be a sign that the body is getting used to the new protein that is being pumped inside the body. If you experience any allergic reactions or if side effects persist, then you may need to seek medical advice to get further clarity on whether it's the collagen causing them or if it's signalling you to a different internal concern or issue. Once again, side effects of taking collagen are uncommon but if they do happen usually considered normal and minor! Collagen supplements may lead to mild bloating, heartburn or even feelings of fullness (as we’ve already mentioned); alternatively, you might be reacting based on an allergy. Side effects are not always a reality to taking collagen and not always as serious as you might first appear, but do seek medical advice if the supplement is causing you concern or persistent discomfort!
